There are many reasons why people enter online competitions or giveaways. My main interest started when I was unwell and had lots of spare time and unable to do much else and now I’m hooked.
Where it all started
My first taste of competitions was when; our honorary Aunt used to come by every week and bring sweets with her. One Saturday (when Freddos were only 10p! haha) they had a competition on the packaging. All of my siblings received the same sweets, but I clearly picked up the winning Freddo wrapper and it revealed that I had won a choice of Playstation game from the list, of which I selected ‘Crash Bash’ a game full of fun mini games for a maximum of 4 players. We had so much fun!
Years later in my teenage years, when we finally had access to the internet. I entered a free competition with Heart Radio online and I received a letter through the post saying I had won a large, flat screen Television and all I had to do was call the number in the letter. Being the sceptical person I generally am, I didn’t believe it and my mother rang for me, it all got arranged and to my surprise it turned up!
I then didn’t really enter much after that, I got together with my partner in my late teens, moved in with him, found myself a great job, got engaged and started our life together. Until illness hit, life became a lot more difficult and I felt so useless as I was finding it hard to work and sadly had to give up work. This is when I had a lot more time on my hands and started to hunt around for things to do that didn’t mean going out or I could do on fairly bad days and not be stuck just watching TV. That is when I found the comping world, I joined challenges, made friends and won some great things. I only entered the free competitions as we were living off one wage. I would enter for items that I would like, could use or could gift on special occasions to family and friends. One of my earlier wins was a young crafters magazine of which I actually chose to send to a little girl who had life long conditions on a children’s charity site, Post Pals, who was currently under the care of the hospital.
Preparing to start comping
To prepare to start comping, you need to think if there is anything you’d like to enter for in particular and if there is anything you will completely disregard. For me, spa breaks and holidays out of a certain radius is something I often give it a miss. Spas aren’t usually a thing that I would personally enjoy and it would depend on how long the holidays were, to how far I would go and if travel and what is included.
You need to decide this as then you won’t waste your time, as there are loads of competitions out there.
Make sure you know that wins are not guaranteed. Some people will enter 200 competitions and win 50 of them, which is a quarter, other people may only win 1 or 2, or might not even win any. So please don’t get your hopes up or think this is a form of a good income.
I find recording my wins to be helpful, just what I won and where from, if I get deflated it is good to look back on them to boost my comping mojo.
The only way I record what I have entered is on my chosen forum or website, by using their tick/entered features. You can find your own competitions, but it helps to choose a site that shares them and work through the ones you want to enter. There are a fair few sites out there, but stick to one at first. It will help you not get overwhelmed and it will help you keep track of what you have entered. Some competitions will disqualify you if you enter more than once, so good to keep track.
Some competitions you will already be able to see if you have already entered though like Gleam, Rafflecopter, most social media etc.

Your details
Now you need to decide what details you are happy to offer us for a potential win.
I would say to set up an email address especially for competition entries, this is because some competitions ask you to sign up to their newsletters and although you can unsubscribe at any time, you will often need to be on their mailing list at the time the competition winner is selected.
You want your email address to look as ‘normal’ as possible, like a genuine email address, so not ‘yourname.comping@whatnot’ so don’t add words like comping, comper, competitions, giveaways etc. just a simple standard email address works well. This is because some people or companies will not allow compers to win, as this may be classed as un-genuine or deceiving, but I don’t think they can disregard you if you entered the competition yourself with your genuine details.

You can also redirect emails with certain words included to a separate folder, so you receive an email containing 'Congrats' 'Congratulations' or even 'Winner' 'Selected' you can then scroll through that folder easier to see if you may have won, as the winning messaging will likely be in that folder. Always check your Junk/Spam mail though, you may get some genuine competition wins that make it into your Junk folder.
You may choose to have another mobile purely for comping, maybe a pay as you go phone, but I’ve not had many more spam calls or postal mail than the average person and I’m happy to block, report or even change my number if really necessary.
Always check that the entry information is necessary though, some competitions will have a box for a first name, last name, phone number, email and postal address BUT only your first name and email address is required. Many will also have a tick box for you to get more information from certain companies and a tick box for accepting terms and conditions, when only the terms and conditions box is required. They often have an asterisk/star* next to the required options. Whatever you do supply, it usually has to be your official name and details, as some competitions will ask for ID or proof (Rarely, but some may do, usually to check you are who you say you are and to make sure you are the required age) If your details are proven to be fake then they have the right to redraw.

You also need to work out if you are happy to use your personal social media, as Facebook specifically only allows users to have one account and it has to be set up with your actual name and details, otherwise they can close your account without warning or delete them. So check the terms of each site and decide if you want to use your personal accounts or set up a separate one, if terms and conditions of the sites allow. Although some competition hosts will only select those accounts that look genuine anyway.

Still to come:

Mother hedgehogs will feed their babies until they are around 8 weeks old, before they venture out on their own.

Sadly the hedgehog population is in a huge decline, we need to help look out for our late night garden visitors. It is estimated that the hedgehog population has fallen by 30% - 50%, since 2000. They do usually prefer the countryside, hedgerows and woodlands, but sadly with more places being built on, where they would usually set up home, they are looking for more urban areas to reside in.

We can help these vulnerable creatures by setting up suitable places for them to settle down, that won’t be disturbed, with easy access points around the area for them to access food, water and safe areas without being out in the open for other potential dangers.

Hedgehogs usually start coming out in the evening when the sun goes down, they start re-emerging from their winter hibernation, if they hibernated (not all will have) April/May time. It is very unusual to see a hedgehog out in the day and if you do you should approach it to see if they look bright and healthy, if so they may be a mother hedgehog out collecting nesting and food for the summer, otherwise you may need to give them a helping hand by putting them in a secure box with a suitable amount of access to air but so they can’t climb out, as they are surprising good climbers. You then need to take them to the local wildlife rehabilitation centre so they can be checked over and cared for if needed.

Please handle hedgehogs with care and only pick them up if they are in danger; sitting in a busy road, ill or out in the day and needing to be taken to the wildlife centre, for care. It is best to wear some good, thick gloves like gardening gloves, and scoop them up gently with both hands, supporting the whole hedgehog. Do not worry about the hedgehog passing on any fleas, hedgehogs are prone to fleas but they are host specific fleas so they can’t survive without a hedgehog host. Ticks are also quite common behind hedgehogs ears, once attached to their host they shouldn’t have any interest in you, but in some bad cases it may cause the hedgehog to become anaemic - but please don’t attempt to remove these ticks yourself, as often part of the tick stays in place and can cause more issues.

A Hedgehog’s Diet

Hedgehogs are insectivores and should be encouraged to eat wild insects and hunt for themselves, the fresh insects they catch are usually full of nutrients, please do not put out dried mealworms as these aren’t great and your hedgehog will likely devour them but lack of nutrition can leave them very poorly. You can use bricks or wood to create a safe space or hedgehog house. You want your house to allow a hedgehog in with a couple of inches either side, the hedgehog house must be solid and un-moveable for larger animals and contain a swirl/spiral system inside so that a larger animal's paw can’t reach in and swipe the hedgehog and pull them out. You can add in some clean leaf piles for bedding, these may need checking and having a clean out now and again, please only do this in the late evening when your hedgehogs have already left and are likely out hunting.

One last thing is to make sure you haven’t got any bags, barbed wire, litter or anything your garden visitors can catch themselves on. If you have a sports goal, most nets are removable as animals such as hedgehogs, snakes and foxes are prone to get caught up in them, so please make sure they are folded up and out of the way if left unattended.

Always check your bonfire before lighting, too many hedgehogs have had severe injuries or very sad deaths due to fires.

Hedgehog Highways
A great way of helping hedgehogs stay out of danger is to give them a helping hand for access routes. They are good diggers and good climbers, but the less time out in the open the more likely they will be able to survive. Those holes in the bottom of your fence you’ve been thinking about fixing up, please consider keeping it open for hedgehogs to use or even creating one for them, it is best to do it under a hedge or somewhere under cover, if you have dogs though, if you could create something where you dog won’t be able to access, even behind a shed, I’m sure they would be very grateful for it!

You can even buy little hedgehog highway signs to go over the gap/hole; this can also make sure you have a smooth edge, so could be sanded down so they can’t get easily scraped or caught. We researched the smallest species of turtle that you could keep as a pet and we decided on a Common musk turtle. Sadly we didn't look into rescuing turtles, plus I wouldn't have known where to look. We would have loved to have rescued and would do in the future if we were to consider another one.

Mitch was the size of a 20 pence piece when we took her home, we didn't know her gender as it is quite difficult to tell when they are so small. We got the tank ready, with filter and heater, making sure she had space to climb out of the water and bask when she wanted.

When she was this small most ornaments or rocks are a suitable size as a basking spot!

As she grew we looked into larger platforms and ramps and couldn't find many suitable. We did have a couple of branded ones but they were becoming harder to come by and the prices were soaring. You shouldn't need to replace them very often, but even after a certain amount of cleaning we felt they needed to be replaced after a while. It was also an issue of them staying put, some would be attached by suction cups and others magnets, they would ping off or come away with the weight of a climbing turtle so weren't a permanent solution.

We measured our tank and worked out how much space out of the water we would like her to have - maybe a third of the tank length. Take into consideration the soil, where the sun goes, at what time of day and what animals have access through your garden.

You can pick up soil pH testing kits for around £10-£20, just scrape some soil into the pot, add some solution and you should get a colour either red, orange, yellow or green. Green means you have more alkaline soil (8-14) and red would be more acidic (0-7)

Alkaline soil plants:
Lily of the valley - popular plant that loves alkaline soil.

Polemoniums - pretty flower to bring colour to your garden, loves thick alkaline soil, add mulch to bulk out the soil before planting.

Lavender - adding some depth to your garden, loves to be in the full sun, will add scent and help keep the flies away.

Rosemary and Thyme - both love to be grown in well drained soil in the sunlight, can add scent to your garden and can add to your cooking.

Acidic soil plants:
Magnolias - moist, drained, sunny or slightly shaded area.

Ceanothus - loves a sunny area with acidic soil.

Summer Heather/Calluna vulgaris - is a pretty plant that should thrive in mild acidic soil.

Camellias - These are bright, big and beautiful, thriving in more acidic soil.

Now is a great time to collect up any mulch around the garden and sprinkle over your soil, pad out around your plants to keep them upright, protected and reduce the chance of them drowning when it rains.

There are lots of plants currently available at garden centres for you to start adding colour to your garden including daffodils, tulips and pansies. You can add colour with plant pots too, not just plants.

If you want to save some pennies but bulk out your flower beds and borders, check to see if anyone has any cuttings with roots, bulbs or bare root roses that can be planted and they should soon start to sprout and it won’t be long before they fill out for you to admire.

It is still fairly cold outside with temperatures that keep fluctuating, so anything you want to start growing, you can always start by growing them inside your home, to help get them started. Herbs are always a popular one, as they can be used in cooking, grow fairly quickly and some have some amazing scents like mint to keep an area smelling fresh, mint is also a repellent for most insects, arachnids and even mice.

You can make use of old egg cartons too by seeding some of your plants in them, old plant pots are popular for children growing their own cress, beans or plants but you might want to make some drainage holes and they won’t degrade like egg cartons will.
Danniihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302988500841021238noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546386610710381053.post-2241930702444318002023-02-10T16:42:00.007+00:002023-02-12T04:09:33.757+00:00Oral-B 3D White Clinical

I was lucky enough to be selected to be part of an exclusive group of just 800 savvy circlers who got sent the new Oral-B 3D White Clinical toothpaste to try.

‘NEW Oral-B 3D White Clinical toothpaste, Oral-B’s ultimate whitening duo, in one tube. I’ve tried different brands, scents and even types of toothpaste in the past and tend to just stick to the one I know. Even though I personally love those that are minty and will leave my mouth feeling fresh.

The first time in the morning, I put a little more on than needed. You really do only need a pea size amount, it foams up nicely and has a fresh peppermint scent. I did notice a little tingling of my lips and gums, but nothing major, plus I did already have quite chapped lips to start with, before using the toothpaste, so that was to be expected.

The second application was in the evening, I put on a more suitable amount of toothpaste and brushed with my manual toothbrush as usual.

My teeth weren’t overly stained before but after using the Oral-B 3D White Clinical toothpaste, they certainly felt much fresher, smoother and I do feel they have slightly improved with general life staining and dullness. It's been awhile.

So what's been happening since?
Suki was sadly put to sleep in December, she was very unwell.
Not much else has happened.
I left my day job to take a break and concentrate on my health.
My niece is now 10 weeks old! How did that happen? She's as gorgeous as ever and I've been spending as much time as I can with her.
A new year arrived.
A new addition arrived - Buddy the hamster, who will be introduced properly on a new post.
Milton is now friends with Lincoln and Lexi and living together, after the loss and Suki.
We're currently caring for a hamster that was given back to us, as they no longer wanted to keep her, she's needing twice daily treatment on her eyes and should be heading to her new home with one of the veterinary staff members on Tuesday!
And just day to day life chores, needing to be done and caught up on.Danniihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302988500841021238noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546386610710381053.post-30668244214831399372019-11-16T13:04:00.000+00:002019-11-16T13:04:02.223+00:0032 Pet Competitions Ending SoonE: 17/11 Win Some Natural Pet Munchies Dog Treats (TW)
My sister was feeling a little down and she's been sick nearly everyday of her pregnancy so we decided to throw her a surprise baby shower, a little early and a little short notice but we made it happen.

A neighbour of my family is also my partner's second family and their mum decorates cakes for a hobby, she was busy making another cake but she kindly fitted in this amazing cake. She apologised for it being quick and simple but we all thought it was perfect! A Victoria sponge to suit everybody's needs and to avoid the allergies that some people had.
I made a quick card up, with a new style of card that I had never tried before, so it is far from perfect. But it announced to my sister where to go and what time to turn up on the day. I gave it to her with a mummy to be sash and my mum surprised me with an auntie to be sash to wear on the day too.
We arranged nibbles, drinks and party games to enjoy, it was a couple of hours long, in the evening to suit the guests working hours on the weekend.
As the guests arrived I handed them two pieces of paper, one of which was for their predictions on the baby, including name, weight, arrival date and time, length, hair colour and eye colour. The other piece of paper was for a message to my sister and her partner, which I would later frame and gift to my sister.
Our first game consisted of nappies filled with different crushed chocolate bars and they had to guess what the chocolate bars were, there was one winner that guessed all six chocolate bars and was awarded with a prize of their choice from a selection.
The second game was pin the dummy on the baby, a clear winner was the blue dummy and the lady got to select her prize too.
The last game was guess the baby foods, there were some really simple ones like just peas, but there were also some more obscure ones, not many people guessed many correctly, so we have three joint winners, but two of them worked together so their were two prizes awarded, as two of them were more than happy to share their gin truffles!
The last hour we saw my sister open the gifts and discussed stories and had long conversations about the baby and new parenthood.

My sister was delighted with her baby shower and although we did it on a budget and hired out a hall, it was actually pretty good.Danniihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302988500841021238noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546386610710381053.post-10307345571787854202019-09-17T18:10:00.000+01:002019-09-17T18:10:07.562+01:00Update PostIt has been a little while since I posted here.
Quite a bit has happened since.

We lost our black bunny, Marvin to a horrible illness. R.I.P Little man. He was our first bunny and will never be forgotten!

If you follow our Facebook page you'll also know that Suki gained a stuffed animal toy to keep her company, named by you, called Snuggles, but after a few weeks it just wasn't doing it for her, the loneliness kicked in. So while my partner was away I was on a hunt for an older bunny and we found Milton. My beautiful partner travelled all the way back down south, from visiting his family, then on the same night he came with me to pick up the new addition to the family, from an hour away. Milton is 3 years old, never had a name before and it took 2 days to bond him with Suki and now they are the best of friends, although not quite like the relationship between Marvin and Suki.

I'm also going to be an Auntie again! This time it is my own sister's little one, sweet little girl is growing okay, a little on the small side but healthy otherwise. I delivered a Ladybird Trunki overflowing with unisex baby clothes in a variation of sizes and a box full of toddler toys, this was before we knew she was having a little girl.

Last Friday my sister and I took a trip to the local Monkey Clothes sale, which is a sale of new or barely used secondhand clothes, from birth to teen years. We riffled through the rails searched high and low, I bought several items, mainly with bunnies on! of course. I also got the cutest giraffe slippers that were brand new which my sister fell in love with as she is slightly obsessed with giraffes for the baby. My sister also bought quite a few items for the little lady, she will be truly spoilt when she arrives and my sister barely needs to buy anymore clothes for the little one until she's around a year now!

Cold, dark, windy days like these can make anyone feel down and have no energy or enthusiasm. Especially with the mornings and evenings being really dark too.
I find light therapy can help improve my mood and energy levels, just an hour or so a day.

You'll need a special light box which come in variety of shapes and sizes, they can look like a box or you can even get those that blend in with the decor and have specialised lamps that do the same job. I have the LitePod energy for life box, I've had it for quite a few years now and it definitely helps wake me up and gives me a better start to the day, I believe it cost me around £100 but I got a travel case and extra bulbs with it too. Depending on the person you will need to use your light box around 30 minutes to an hour or so daily, you put it on in the morning and you have to sit close enough to it so that it reflects in your eyes, but not too close that it blinds you! You can have it on when you are having breakfast or even if you are working on your laptop, as long as it is in eye range and you can see it.
You can even buy alarm clocks now that simulates the sun coming up, we have a great one by Lumie, you set your alarm and half and hour before the alarm sounds, it starts getting brighter as if the sun is rising, then when it is time to get up, it is on its brightest and the alarm will begin to sound, helping you wake up more naturally.

There is no scientific evidence that this works, but for people suffering for SAD (Seasonal affective disorder) it is highly recommended, unless you have an eye condition or taking medications that make you more sensitive to light, it is worth talking to your doctor about using the light box, a lot of companies do a money back guarantee so you can return them if it isn't working for you. Make sure you get a light box that is specifically for people that are effected by seasonal affective disorder and it might be worth discussing with the sellers how long you might benefit from using the light for daily.

I tend to only bring my SAD light out on days like these, where my energy is low and the sun is nowhere to be seen. It is up to you whether you use it on a daily basis during the winter months, but I'd highly recommend them for anyone who thinks they may have SAD or even those that just feel a little less themselves on the darker days, I wouldn't recommend using after 1pm though as it may disrupt your sleep later that night.Danniihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302988500841021238noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546386610710381053.post-41530500575579532562018-10-10T16:01:00.004+01:002018-10-10T16:01:49.342+01:00House Mouse Birthday Cupcake card

I haven't crafted for a while, but I saw my friend was selling some beautiful stamps, which included 3 house mouse stamps, I absolutely adore house mouse and they were so cheap I couldn't resist. So I created a card for my father-in-law to be for his upcoming birthday, he appreciates handmade items so much, so I hope he likes his card.
Gleam is a competition hosting platform where people can upload competitions with different tasks, you can set mandatory tasks or just regular tasks or even set daily tasks (which is usually optional to enter daily or not.) For example: Visit a Facebook Page = 1 entry, Follow on Twitter = 3 entries, Follow on Pinterest = 1 entry and so on. There are a couple of different accounts you can have, if you are hosting lots of competitions then you may need a paid account, if you are only hosting a couple you can use their free accounts and if you are entering competitions it is all free to enter.

You can view the number of entries you have in a giveaway at the top left of the widget.
The total number of entries, from everyone who has entered is often shown in the top middle (although sometimes are not, if the promoter has turned this option off) and the time left of the competition is usually the top right of the widget.

We pulled up in the car park and waited for the other half of the party to turn up. There was plenty of parking spaces, although the disabled parking spaces weren't very big. Whilst we waited for them, we went on inside, used the facilities and pre paid ready for the others to arrive. There was a deal for five people being £50 and Oscar my nephew got to go in for free as he was under the age of 3.

There was five of us, My partner's dad, who was in a wheelchair, My partner, My partner's sister and her partner, our nephew, who was in a pushchair and myself.

There was plenty of wheelchair/pushchair access into the building, as you walk into the door, you walk straight into the toy shop, which is where you get your wristbands, map and stamp card. With the stamp card, there are stamps hidden around the park and you fill in the card and at the end can get a sticker - great for the kids!

You walk through into different areas with different animals, play areas and even a cafe to sit down and eat. There are plenty of toilets around the animal centre, although not all wheelchair friendly.
Oscar loved looking at the animals and playing at the park areas, he sat on a tractor and didn't want to get off! The cockateel was very talkative and is located by the go kart area which was also a great hit with the nephew. The food was very good, lovely portions and you could ask for half portions for a child, not badly priced either, plenty of places to sit inside and highchairs available.

After lunch we walked around the dinosaur section, they have dinosaur statues on a trail along with facts about them, a good walk with some interesting facts, before we headed home.

I would definitely recommend All Things Wild for a day out with the family, lots to do and fun for most ages.

Cards with dimension do not have to be complicated, expensive and you don't need that many materials either.

Today I will show you a really simplistic card using just a plain 6x6 inch card, scraps of white card, a Tonic punch, PVA glue and some rhinestones or flat back pearls.

Once you have a large amount of flowers, in my case, 21, then you want to place them into a circular shape onto your card - you may want to draw a circle on first, but I did it free hand.

You want to then select your centre of your flowers, I chose some colourful flat back pearls, but you could use rhinestones or even just hole punched coloured paper.

I selected my colours and then stuck them down onto the centre of my flowers with my PVA glue.

You could then add a sentiment into the centre, a photo, even a coloured in image or simply leave it as it is.Danniihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302988500841021238noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546386610710381053.post-75731794328559592232018-07-01T00:00:00.000+01:002018-07-01T00:00:04.324+01:00Inexpensive hamperFather's Day hasn't long gone by and I'm sure I'm not the only one that has a father that they never know what to buy for them. His birthday is coming up soon too, which is going to be another tricky one to find a gift for!

I saw some baskets on a local Facebook selling page that were perfect for small hampers, 2 for £4, so I asked to see if they would let me have them for £3 and I went and collected them, from the next street. I was thinking of either putting together a hamper of bath stuff, such as bubble bath, flannel (maybe shaped into some sort of animal) a rubber duck and other toiletries, but I also thought that he loves his food and loves cheese and crackers that would maybe be a better option.

So we popped to our local Asda to get some supplies.
I selected the following, costing me the following, although I could have saved myself something by buying different crackers and biscuits, but the box I bought was perfect size for the hamper and had a selection already in it.

Jacob's Cracker Selection £2.99
Cheddar pickle onions and chive cheese £2.00
Wensleydale cranberry cheese £2.00
Double Gloucester onion and chives cheese £2.00
Sweet Pickle 57p
Mustard Piccalilli 78p
Tomato Chutney 90p

I already had some cellophane wrapping and I reused a bow that was on a gift for my partner so the hamper cost me £12.74 in total, which isn't bad for someone on a tight budget and a gift that my father throughly enjoyed.

We came across a Shpock Advert for a male dwarf hamster who loved to eat a lot and occasionally bites, the only issue was the hamster was over an hour and a quarter away. He was the only dwarf hamster that came up for adoption around that time and nobody wanted a hamster that potentially bit and was already one years old, I had my heart set on him, even though there wasn't many photos of him, only a tiny picture of him sitting by his food bowl through the bars and a picture of his little pink cage with a green wheel in and a bottle held on by an elastic band.

I arrived at the property, a large group of people in a small flat, they were moving house and were unable to take him with them, so were looking to re-home him. I peered in the cage and couldn't see him, he was hiding in the little house, I asked to hold him and they were more than happy for me to but apologised encase he bit me. He was as good as gold and just sat there, I popped him in the carrier with some of his bedding and took him home.

Once he had time to settle in, we would get him out most nights, whilst he explored us and the area. He is a gentle old soul, he was never very speedy, he loves his food especially mealworms. We expanded his cage and gave him more enrichment, including sand baths (one which he used as a toilet) more hideaways and tunnels, a larger 20cm wheel and a unbranded Whimzee to chew on and enjoy.

Sedrick sadly took a turn for the worst this week, having a large lump growing under his chin, could anything else go wrong for this little fella?! After loosing Roxy last month who had a tumour I thought the worst, especially with his age and his current health.

But we just got back from the vets and it turns out he had an abscess caused by his bottom teeth, the vet popped it and there was blood and pus everywhere, the smell wasn't that pleasant either! Luckily he made it through the ordeal and we have to keep cleaning it, making sure the wound doesn't heal, leaving him with a hole in the underside of his chin. He is on Baytril and Metacam all his life now most likely and will continue to eat baby food and porridge if he can't manage much else. The one thing he will really miss though is his sand bath.
The Importance of Hay

A rabbit's diet should be at least 80% of hay, they should eat at least their own body size in hay a day.

Rabbit's need constant access to hay to snack on throughout the day and night, this is to help keep the gut moving and to stop any blockages of fur or other things ingested. The long fibres help keep the muscles in the stomach stay strong.

Rabbits have 28 teeth and they are continuously growing, they grow around 12cm a year, hay helps grind these teeth down and stop them growing into the side of their face and cause abscesses.

After a few messages back and forth, I was speaking to a lovely lady who was looking after her daughter's rabbit, after her daughter moved out and was unable to carry on caring for him. He was around 5-6 years old, known to be in good health and hadn't had any of his vaccines or been neutered. We arranged for her to drop him off with some of his food and we'd plan on getting him neutered, if it was advisable due to his age, have both his vaccines and pair him up with a female bunny.

I was passed a cardboard box where this little bunny was sitting hunched up inside. I gently lifted him out, gave him a big cuddle and placed him down on the floor, where he ran to the litter tray full of hay and sat there peacefully.

After speaking to the lady more and observing the bunny I asked if he had had his teeth checked recently and she said 'why do you think there is something wrong with his teeth?' I stated that I ask these questions for most of the bunnies that were handed over and I was being more cautious as this bunny was stated not to of eaten hay for over 5 years.

Once the lady had left, bunny, now named Murphy, picked up some hay and kept spitting it out, I offered him some of his food which he seemed disinterested in and some treats. We would normally let a bunny settle in before we did anything for them, but we noticed some very overgrown nails and they had to be cut straight away for his own comfort.
Whilst trimming his nails I noticed his two front paws - one looked deformed without any hair on and the other was missing some hair, looked sore and had yellow fur around it.
An hour went by, he hadn't moved, drank, eaten or shown any interest in anything, his paws were sore to touch and I had a bad feeling about it all, so I rang the vets immediately. They managed to book him in for that evening.

It is always better to phone the vets if you are worried about a bunny's health as they can go down hill very quickly, especially with new rabbits, although sometimes it takes awhile for them to settle in, so they might not be in the greatest spirits, but even if you just book your new rabbit in for a general health check!

Whilst we were waiting for the veterinary appointment time to come closer, Murphy would sit grinding his teeth, so loudly, every ten minutes or so, still wouldn't eat or drink. This was very concerning and I was so grateful for the later appointment, I just wish it came sooner.

We arrived at the vets, they weighed him, checked his body condition, checked his ears and teeth. We explained our concerns and explained our plan for neutering and finding him a lady friend, which they completely agreed with but told us before he would have surgery for the neuter, that he would have to get better first.
The deformed bare foot and the balding yellow foot was burns from where he had been drooling, a life without hay had badly done damage to his teeth and now his paws, the vet prescribed him some gut stimulate, antibiotics and pain relief to try and encourage him to eat and poop, as a bunny with gut stasis isn't a good bunny to operate on and he would have to go back in the morning for an operation on his teeth.

After a night of him still grinding his teeth, we kept him indoors near our room so we could hear him. We heard nothing through the night, he hadn't even moved from where we placed him by the looks of it. Nothing was eaten, still no poop, but the vets decided he needed his teeth looking at or he may never eat again.

After a long afternoon of waiting for him to come out of surgery I received a phone call, 'Hello I'm calling about Murphy, we did all we could with his teeth, the operation was going well, we managed to complete the operation, but unfortunately he didn't wake up, I'm so very sorry.'

We did all we could for him, I loved him so very much in the small amount of time of knowing him. The dreaded collection of the body had to happen though, so we went to collect him right away.
We spoke to the vet further and they said it was the life without hay that left him malnourished and with bad teeth, his teeth were the worst they had ever seen at the surgery, they even photographed it to show us. Most of his teeth were rotten, rotting or had already fallen out, he had some growing into the side of his face, which was the ones they had to remove, this was causing him all the pain.
Murphy had woken up for a few minutes after the operation but he was too poorly to carry on and his body just gave up.

How to get your bunny to eat hay

If your bunny won't eat hay there is lots you can do and try. There are a large variety of different hay available, the most popular being Timothy hay which also comes in lots of different brands and from different places, all tasting differently and of a different quality. So just because you've tried one type of Timothy hay, doesn't mean your bunny won't like a different brand. The greener more stalker hay is the best. There are other types such as meadow hay, oat hay and alfalfa hay but alfalfa hay should be limited for adult buns as it can be quite fattening.

There is also a large variety of hay that contain different mixes, from dandelion mixes to marigold mixes, apple mixes to carrot mixes, they aren't good all of the time but to help encourage them to eat hay and they are a fantastic treat.

Cutting down on pellets can help encourage them to eat more hay, after all an adult rabbit over the age of 6 months, only needs a tablespoon of pellets per kilo gram of rabbit per day.

Put hay above or in their litter tray, rabbits love to eat and poop at the same time, this will help encourage them.

Mix hay with grass and herbs this will encourage them to eat more.

Hay cookies are available to help them get used to eating hay, but only give 1 or 2 a day.

Try rubbing some hay around their mouth, sometimes this encourages them to bite it and find out that they actually like it.

Make toys out of cardboard tubes stuffing them with hay and herbs.
Gut stasis is a deadly condition which can cause a rabbit not to want to eat or drink, it is where the bunnies digestive system slows down or completely stops. Bad bacteria then builds up into their intestines and releases gasses into their system which can cause very painful bloating.

What are the signs of gut stasis?

Gut stasis usually shows itself by your rabbit not wanting to eat or drink anything, not wanting to do much and generally not themselves, sat hunched up and their poop will likely be very small or nonexistent.

Why do rabbits get gut stasis?

Gut stasis can caused by a number of things, a bunny in pain often gets gut stasis, if a bunny gets spooked that can cause them to go into stasis, bunnies with bad teeth, a stressed bunny, even lack of exercise can cause it. Every bunny can get stasis, for a number of reasons, it is just important that you spot it before it gets worse or before it is too late.

What should I do if I suspect my rabbit has gut stasis?

If you suspect your rabbit has gut stasis, you should contact a vet immediately, rabbits go down hill very quickly and need urgent veterinary care. Your vet is likely to administer pain relief and inject them with a gut stimulant, to get the gut moving again and get them poop. They may also give some antibiotics to help combat the overgrowth of any bad bacteria.

They will sometimes send you home with more medication usually pain relief and sometimes more gut stimulant to administer later on or the next day. It is good to also offer Critical care to encourage them to eat more and to get food and nutrients into them. Critical care is a powdered mix that you mix with water to a consistency where it is able to be put through a syringe and syringe fed orally to your rabbit. Depending on the vet and the severity of the problem, they may want to do some x-rays to check their is no blockages before treating and sometimes also like to keep them in on an IV drip to get them hydrated and to soften the the mass in the intestines.

Once you are home you can offer them lots of fresh water, hay and greens to encourage them to eat. If you usually offer a bottle then it is good to put out a bowl of water too, to encourage them to drink.

After treatment your rabbit should start to perk up and begin to eat, if your rabbit doesn't show any sign of improvement or gets worse it is important to re-contact the rabbit savvy vet for immediate action. With the correct care and time, your rabbit can make a full recovery.

How do you prevent gut stasis?

Ensuring your rabbit has a good diet will help prevent gut stasis occurring, it should be mostly a diet of good quality hay, this is to help with their digestive system, provides them with a large amount of fibre and also keeps their teeth ground down and healthy. You can see a good diet in our Rabbit 101 - Diet post.

Reducing the amount of stress and noise around your rabbit can help keep gut stasis a bay, also giving them enough space and enrichment will keep them active and help.

Regular vet check ups can help keep your bunny healthy and can help check to see if there is any underlying issues with your rabbit or their teeth which can help keep your bunny healthy.

After loosing my dog to a mystery illness, I was left heart broken and pining for another pet, he was my saviour. We discussed what pet we might like and decided on a bearded dragon. Although I came across a rescue centre online that mainly had rabbits and guinea pigs and decided I would go and have a look, just for some free cuddles and there was a lovely lady bunny that I loved the look of, baring in mind I knew nothing about rabbits or guinea pigs!

Turning into a house at the top of a road, we were taken around the back where there was a couple of sheds, some with hutches in, others were the hutch. We took at look at the female that I had my eye on, but we weren't allowed to interact with her as she was in the middle of a phantom pregnancy and very grumpy. I was taken to the guinea pig shed and told to hold out my arms, whilst she opened up a hutch, this was when black bunny was placed into my arms, he just sat there and snuggled in, I was told how to support his bottom whilst holding him and she explained his story.

This bunny had no name, he came in with his brother, not long after he was born, they fought so were separated and his brother went off to his new home. They were in the rescue for around 6 months, as no one wanted a black bunny. So the rescue took it upon themselves to bring him indoors every evening whilst they watched the soaps, to give him lots of love and cuddles.

We left the rescue and took a visit to Pets at Home to check prices of hutches and items, not intending to get one there are then, but I couldn't get the little lonely bunny out of my head and we bought a carrier and supplies after phoning the rescue and headed back to collect him!

They were delighted bunny had a home and even a name, I chose the name Marvin on the way to collect him.

The rescue didn't usually rehome single bunnies, but they agreed if we gave him enough attention and time then he would be okay. We adored him and spent most of our spare time with him, giving him lots of love, hugs and cuddles which he seemed to enjoy, whilst we were learning about rabbits, he taught us a lot of things.
Until one day he went absolutely crazy, buzzing around my friend, we didn't know what was wrong, although she had a unspayed female at home, he could smell her and was flinging poop all around the room.
My friend left and he was still acting very strange, my partner and I were sat watching television, when he jumped up on our laps, climbed the back of the sofa and sprayed us both in the face! This was not a pleasant experience and he was booked straight in for neutering.
He lived with us for around 16 months as a lone bunny, he seemed content. As I was researching bunnies I kept coming across that rabbits should ideally be in pairs or groups, I thought my boy was okay... seeing other bunnies with their partners made me think it really wasn't fair on him and decided to research how to go about getting another rabbit, when a single female appeared on the same rescue's website. She was crossed with a dwarf and was rather small compared to the other bunnies at the rescue, so they were looking for her to have a small husbun, she was spayed and ready for her new home. Marvin was a Netherland dwarf cross too and was fairly small, so we took him back to the rescue to meet this little lady.
They placed the white bunny, then called Charlie, in a small run and asked us to place Marvin in with her.... they did nothing! no reaction. We waited for around 10 minutes whilst they just sat there, then suddenly Marvin started humping her and her head. We weren't sure what to think, what was my baby doing?! Apparently it was normal and was to help work out who was in charge, as long as they were not biting and fighting the rescue lady didn't seem too bothered.
We stood chatting and watching them, whilst there was a lot of ignoring and a small amount of humping from the bunnies. They said that the meeting was very successful and they wouldn't usually expect bunnies to be so calm on their first meeting, we signed the paperwork and was given the okay to take them both home after an hour or so of them being together, they sat side by side in the carrier and we took them home.
We spent the day on bunny watch, seeing how they interacted with each other and within hours they were snuggled up together, so they went to bed together that night and have been together ever since.
We were so lucky with this bonding, I'm so glad we decided to check her out, Charlie became Suki and we had a bonded pair, Marvin and Suki.
There is nothing like another bunny friend and I feel guilty for not doing it sooner for him, but years later they are still going strong together.Danniihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18302988500841021238noreply@blogger.com0
